New Organization Creates Safety App for Native Alaskan Homeless, Seeks Donations.
A new organization based in Fairbanks, Operation: NightLight (OPNL), has developed an app for homeless and vulnerable individuals such as Native Alaskans and Women. Minorities are disproportionately likely to experience homelessness in the United States, and the ongoing epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) is intricately tied to Indigenous homelessness.
The app works in two main ways. The first function is a map and GPS that guides individuals in need of shelter and safety to the nearest OPNL shelter, and the second function is an easily accessible S.O.S button that sends out a pre-written message to the user’s choice of pre-programmed emergency services and other personal contacts. This streamlines communication in the event of an emergency, and provides valuable information in the case of the individual being unable to further communicate.
OPNL has further projects in the works to support Native Alaskans and homeless individuals, such as a permanent overnight shelter, and is looking for leads or donations of land and equipment to that end. OPNL also hopes to secure more funding from some of the # different Native corporations created in 1971 for “…the real economic and social needs of Natives…”(ANCSA, 1971) by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
To help fund this app and make it available to those in need for free, donate at: https://opnightlight.com/support-the-app/
